SUMMARY:Month of Photography Lecture Series - Denver Art Museum - Susan Goldstein
DESCRIPTION:Susan Goldstein Artist Talk\nMonth of Photography Lecture Series\nThe Denver Art Museum\nMarch 12\, 2019\, 7-8:30 pm \nDenver photographer Susan Goldstein began her photography career working for Denver’s Westword starting in the late 70s. \nShe shifted the focus of her practice later in life\, working in both straight photography and photo-based collage. \nInspired by collecting and interest in social commentary\, much of Goldstein’s work explores ideas of absence and presence as well as the collision of past and present. \nSusan Goldstein\nDenver Art Museum\n(Hamilton Building\, Sharp Auditorium)\n100 W 14th Ave Parkway\nDenver\, CO 80204\ntickets: 720-913-0130\nmembers & students: $5\nnon-members: $12 \n(Denver CO) Edge Gallery will host a solo exhibition of her series UNDERCURRENTS: Fault Lines. The show will open with a public reception on March 22\, 2019\, from 6-10 pm and will be on view from March 22 – April 7. The artist will be in attendance at a second reception on March 29 from 6-10 pm. \nGoldstein’s work is also included in the Colorado Photographic Arts Center’s exhibit\, Elemental Construction\, on view through April 7 at the McNichols Civic Center. Her new collage work will also be on view as part of the Denver Collage Club show atAlto Gallery March 1 – 30\, with an opening reception was March 1 from 6-9 pm. \nSusan Goldstein 1950- \nSusan Goldstein was born in the middle of the last century in Indianapolis\, Indiana and moved to Boulder\, Colorado to attend college in 1968. After moving to Denver in 1978 she began working for Denver’s weekly newspaper\, Westword\, eventually becoming the staff photographer. An admitted “late bloomer” she pivoted from the world of journalism to fine art at 49. Goldstein has been described by Denver’s art critics as a multifaceted artist who\, in addition to creating many photographic and photo based bodies of work\, has successfully made sculpture from antique office supplies\, addressed a variety of political issues using collage and installation and generally explored mixing materials to make new imagery. Since 2011 her primary focus has been creating antique photo collages for Bending Time and making photographs for her series UNDERCURRENTS. \nThe most recent collage work\, Bending Time\, unites her love of collecting\, photography and collage. UNDERCURRENTS is described as “taking the temperature” of the United States. Many\, but not all\, of the photographs in UNDERCURRENTS are inherently political. By documenting the visual clues that offer insight about the state of a place\, the concerns of the residents and the hopes and sometimes failed dreams of those inhabitants Goldstein continues to create a portrait of “America”. \nGoldstein’s photographic work is included in numerous collections including the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, the Museum of Modern Art\, Joaquim Paiva Collection\, Rio De Janeiro\, Brazil\, Luz Astral Foundation\, Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, Colorado Photographic Arts Center and the Crawford Hotel\, Union Station\, Denver\, CO. Her work has been exhibited extensively including at the New Mexico Museum of Art\, the Griffin Museum of Photography’s Stoneham Gallery\, Colorado Photographic Art Center and Colorado College’s Idea Space.

SUMMARY:Tansey Contemporary Presents - RESONANT\, LEOPOLDO CUSPINERA MADRIGAL\, Recent Work Denver\, CO March 7 – April 7\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Tansey Contemporary is pleased to present “Resonant: Leopoldo Cuspinera Madrigal\, Recent Work” March 7 through April 7\, 2019. The opening reception will occur on March 7 from 5 to 7 pm and the artist will attend. \nWhile studying architecture in the 1980s and 90s\, Cuspinera Madrigal also sang in a choir. “Resonant” highlights these musical and architectural influences\, specifically concepts of space\, rhythm\, cadence\, measures\, meters\, equilibrium\, harmony\, and scale. He likens this body of work to dance\, which visually manifests sound. Cuspinera Madrigal says\, “‘Resonant’ is a series of materialized sonorous mental constructions and joyful moments in which the language employed in both architecture and music is almost the same.” His structured compositions create an expansive\, transcendent experience that enables one to “reach out to the immaterial by means of that which is material.” He sees the act of creation as a call and response between himself and the materials. \nCuspinera Madrigal’s work is based in the ancient\, pre-Columbian papermaking technique of Papel Amate\, which he has modified to create his works. \nHe continues to hone his technique\, which he has used for more than twenty-five years\, to make new discoveries and evolve his art practice. He lets the materials themselves – recycled paper pulp\, pigments\, resins\, water – be active participants in the art making process\, which he likens to action painting\, that balances both rationality and intuition.  \n\n\nMexican artist\, architect\, and academic Cuspinera Madrigal holds several degrees and certificates in architecture\, theology\, cultural heritage\, sacred art\, historical sciences\, industrial heritage\, and archaeology from various universities throughout Europe and Mexico.  Cuspinera Madrigal has exhibited extensively throughout Mexico\, the United States\, Italy\, France\, and Switzerland. He currently lives in Santa Fe\, New Mexico.

SUMMARY:Phillips To Sell Steve McQueen's Rolex Submariner - Auction - New York\, New York
DESCRIPTION:Phillips To Sell Steve McQueen’s Rolex Submariner\nPhillips returns to New York on October 25 with another iconic Rolex\, owned and worn by one of America’s most well-known actors. After Paul Newman’s “Paul Newman”\, it’s time for Steve McQueen’s Submariner.\n4 JUNE 2018\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to announce the sale of a historically important and previously unknown Rolex Submariner owned and worn by Steve McQueen. Given by McQueen to his personal stuntman\, Loren Janes\, and inscribed on the caseback – TO LOREN\, THE BEST DAMN STUNTMAN IN THE WORLD. STEVE – it was thought to have been lost in a fire. With its absolutely fascinating provenance\, the watch was owned until recently by the late Loren Janes himself\, and its remarkable tale of survival\, the watch comes to auction as the single most important watch associated with Steve McQueen to ever appear publicly. \n\n\n\nSteve McQueen has long been revered as the silver screen’s undisputed and unrivaled “King of Cool.” In his twenty-six year career in Hollywood\, he rose to become one of the most well-known and highest paid actors\, starring in the largest grossing films of his era. With a tenacity and ferocity forged by a tumultuous childhood\, each role was an opponent to be tackled head-on. On and off the screen\, McQueen was characterized as a rebel\, a loner\, the epitome of the American male. His coolness was never forced or affected – he just simply was cool. McQueen flew airplanes\, raced cars and motorcycles\, even coming in second place to Mario Andretti’s Ferrari team at the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring in a Porsche 908/02. He needed a watch that could keep up with such a lifestyle\, and he found one in the Rolex Submariner. \n\n\n\nLoren Janes was brought into test as McQueen’s stunt double on the show that propelled McQueen into the public eye – Wanted: Dead or Alive\, a Western television drama McQueen starred in from 1958 until 1961. According to an interview with Janes\, two doubles had already been fired. Janes simply sat down with McQueen and told him that he could make him “look better than he imagined possible.” McQueen requested Janes as his stunt double for every movie on which their schedules would allow them to collaborate\, and consequently\, of McQueen’s twenty-seven major motion pictures\, Loren Janes was his stunt double in nineteen. Close friends for life\, Janes and McQueen were in contact directly before McQueen’s final trip to Mexico for medical treatments. \n\n\n\nA remarkable stuntman in his own right\, Janes performed as a stunt double and served as a stunt coordinator in other notable films and television series of the twentieth century until his retirement in 2002. In 1961\, he co-founded the Stuntmen’s Association of Motion Pictures\, which lives on to this day\, and though officially retired\, spent much of his time outside the entertainment industry improving safety procedures in film. He is widely considered one of the seminal forces in creating the modern stuntman\, and incredibly\, was never seriously injured or even broke a bone during a stunt. Loren Janes sadly passed away in 2017 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. \nIngenious and indefatigable\, it’s no wonder that Steve McQueen would go out of his way to request such a man as his stunt double for the duration of his film career. McQueen was known to gift watches to friends and colleagues that acquitted themselves particularly well\, so it follows that Janes would be the recipient of such a watch. \nOther watches\, even other Rolex Submariners\, have appeared in public with established McQueen provenance\, but none with this level of personalization. In fact\, the present watch is the earliest McQueen-owned Submariner known\, a reference 5513 dating to 1964 and gifted to Loren Janes likely in the mid-to-late 1970s as recollected by the surviving Janes family members. \n\n\n\nElevating its importance in the field of elite collectors’ watches\, it is the only known Steve McQueen watch to include his name engraved on the caseback\, indisputably connecting the watch to its legendary former owner. Furthermore\, with its passionate and emphatic dedication to Janes\, no other McQueen-owned timepiece has been seen that features such an endearing and personalized engraving. \nRobust and enduring\, the perfect companion for a man who specialized in on-screen dives\, a Rolex Submariner was a fitting gift to a man who had risked his life for McQueen on countless occasions. But this Submariner had a final and unbelievable stunt to perform\, though off the wrist of its owner. \nIn 2016\, a wildfire outside of Los Angeles\, now known as the Sand Fire (for California’s Sand Canyon)\, burned intensely for almost two weeks\, destroying over 40\,000 acres of land and killing two. Of the eighteen buildings destroyed\, one of them was the home of Loren Janes and his wife. To the dismay of the Janes family\, nearly all of their personal belongings and Loren Janes’ personal collection of film memorabilia were believed lost. Yet\, at the urging of the current consignor\, who had learned about the tragic fire and knowing the durability of Rolex Submariners\, the family was encouraged to try to find the Rolex in the rubble. And find it they did\, after a few days of dogged shoveling. Once the watch had been found\, the family sent it to be examined and restored by Rolex U.S.A.\, which took particular care in documenting the restoration process and preserving the watch’s priceless caseback. The soot wedged between the Rolex bracelet clasp and on the caseback is indeed still present. \n\n\n\nThe watch will be sold with a letter signed by Loren Janes attesting to its provenance; a remarkable letter and photos from Rolex U.S.A. documenting its restoration while enthusiastically praising Loren Janes\, Steve McQueen\, and the resilience of this extraordinary Submariner; and a book titled Steve McQueen: A Life in Pictures\, which includes photos of Steve McQueen wearing the watch. \n\n\n\nMcQueen’s Rolex Submariner will be offered with an additional\, period correct ref. 5513 dial and hand set\, acquired by the consignor at great expense to bring the watch back to its original configuration as it would have appeared on the wrist of McQueen in the 1960s.\nThe watch is further accompanied with an additional Rolex Submariner glossy/gilt dial and corresponding hand set – correct for its year of manufacture\, acquired at great expense by the current owner to bring the watch back to its original configuration as it would have appeared originally on the wrist of McQueen in 1964. \n\n\n\nThis Rolex Submariner\, given by Steve McQueen to his stuntman Loren Janes\, escaping destruction when destruction seemed inevitable\, is a fitting tribute to these two inimitable men. A portion of the proceeds from the auction of this watch will benefit The Boys Republic\, The McQueen Family charity that rehabilitated McQueen when he was a youth. An additional portion of the proceeds will be gifted to the surviving family members of Loren Janes. \n\n\n\nPhillips is thrilled to offer this watch for the first time\, which can easily be considered one of the most important vintage Rolex watches to ever appear on the market. This top highlight of Phillips’ next New York Watch auction taking place on 25 October 2018 will be offered with an estimate of US $300\,000 to $600\,000.

Concurrent with the expo\, participants can enjoy open-air concerts from Ozomatli and DJ/VJ Max Cooper\, sample food and drink\, explore maker spaces and citizen science projects\, and join in games centered on Interplanetary topics. \nOn June 8\, the Currents New Media Festival\, now in its ninth year\, launches within Futurition|Santa Fe\, showcasing boundary-breaking artists from the worlds of interactive art installations\, multimedia performance\, virtual and augmented reality\, robotics\, video\, animation\, app projects\, and experimental documentaries. From more than 580 projects submitted from artists globally\, the 90 most innovative works will be showcased in and around the Santa Fe Railyard through June 24. \nOther Select Partner Exhibits and Events \nFrom May 25-July 21\, form & concept will present Inner Orbit\, an exhibition of contemporary artists from across the U.S. who will present their interpretations of how the night sky reveals countless overlapping mythologies among its densely layered cultural landscape. Visitors will find out how fortune tellers\, sailors\, writers\, architects and artists have all projected profound meaning into the cosmos—tying earthly events to the movements of heavenly bodies. \nBeginning June 7 and offered during select weekend times throughout June\, Axle Contemporary invites visitors to experience a premiere a multi-sensory perceptual ride: Auger’s Iris. Housed in a 1970s aluminum stepvan\, Iris merges rhythmic sound\, pulsating light and cymatic resonance\, inducing somatic experience beyond the boundaries of the mind and providing a glimpse of the infinite universe within the human brain. \nOpening June 15 with a reception from 5:00-7:00pm  and featuring a pre-event discussion from exhibit curator Kelani Nichole on June 10\, Art House will feature TRANSFER Download\, a virtual exhibition of artists exploring simulation\, algorithm\, procedural animation and online practice.  With multiple artworks installed in one hyperspace\, a hyperlinked display allows viewers to switch between pieces to experience an immersive survey of the art. \nAbout Futurition \nTaking place from June 7-24\, 2018\, in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, Futurition|Santa Fe is a month-long series of festivals and events that brings art\, science and technology together to push the boundaries of human creativity and ingenuity and inspire our vision for the future – transporting us to other worlds\, in our own imaginations\, and beyond. SUMMARY:Tansey Contemporary presents new works by internationally renowned German artist Udo Nöger - Colorado
DESCRIPTION:Udo Nöger\nApril 20 – June 3\, 2018\nOpening Reception: Friday April 20\, 5 – 8pm\nArtist will be present\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGEWICHT DES LICHTES 3\, 70″ x 125″\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTansey Contemporary Denver is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by internationally renowned German artist Udo Nöger\, on view at 1743 Wazee Street from April 20th to June 3rd\, 2018.  \nNöger is well known for his monochromatic\, translucent works that give the impression of emitting light. Light\, its manifestations and its expression\, is the single ongoing focus of the artist’s work\, leading to a unique way of painting that captures\, analyzes\, reworks and reflects – each piece an attempt to make the intangible\, tangible. “I use light itself to paint light” the artist states. \nTo achieve this effect\, Nöger layers multiple pieces of canvas or fabric onto one frame either painting or cutting shapes into each different layer beforehand. The layers absorb the light of their surroundings and appear to reflect it back at the viewer. Deceptively simple organic shapes\, rarely featured on the surface of the works\, unlike traditional painting\, introduce a deeper sense of space from which the light radiates out. The shapes also highlight contrasts between light and shade while creating a sense of fluidity and movement. As a result the minimalist gray and white color palette can often take on shades of purples\, blues\, peaches and greens depending on the time of day and surrounding light. \nBorn in Germany\, Udo Nöger has lived and traveled all over the world. He has exhibited extensively across the world and his works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York\, The Art Institute of Chicago\, and Haus Der Kunst\, Munich\, among others. This will be his first solo exhibition with Tansey Contemporary. \nPlease join us to celebrate the opening of the show with the artist on April 20th from 5-8pm at 1743 Wazee Street in LoDo.

SUMMARY:Parallel Stories Lecture - Santa Barbara Museum of Art - California
DESCRIPTION:Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParallel Stories Lecture\nPoetry as Portraiture: Adam Zagajewski and Andrew Winer\nSunday\, April 15\n2:30 pm\n\nM: Free\, NM:$10\, Senior NM: $6\n\n\n \n\nParallel Stories is a literary and performing arts series that pairs art and artists with award-winning authors and performers of regional\, national\, and international acclaim. This series functions as a multidisciplinary lens through which to view the Museum’s collection and special exhibitions.Prize-winning\, globally-admired poet Adam Zagajewski writes with precision and wonder about the calm and courage of ordinary life. He says of poetry that it “is like a human face — it is an object that can be measured\, described\, catalogued\, but it is also an appeal.” His most recent book\, Slight Exaggeration\, is a blend of memoir\, essay\, and anecdote\, and in which he defines poetry as “a slight exaggeration\, until we make ourselves at home in it. Then it becomes the truth.” Zagajewski is interviewed by fellow writer\, friend\, novelist\, and Chair of the UC Riverside writing program Andrew Winer. Come along on this wildly original journey in the company of Dyer\, whose observations\, idiosyncratic energy\, and clear-sighted vision animate anew Winogrand’s work. SUMMARY:Devon Dikeou Exhibiting @ September Gallery: Sit-In\, a collective look at the split behavior of a familiar form - New York
DESCRIPTION:Devon Dikeou\, BETWEEN THE ACTS (VIRGINIA WOOLF): Jimmy Kimmel\, 2014-Ongoing\, Variable dimensions\n\n\n\n\nSIT-IN\nApril 7-May 20\, 2018\nOpening: Saturday\, April 7\, 6-8pm\n\n\nSEPTEMBER\n449 Warren St\, #3\nHudson\, NY\n\nSARAH BRAMAN\nJANE BUSTIN\nNICOLE CHERUBINI\nLIZ COLLINS\nFRANCESCA DIMATTIO\nDEVON DIKEOU\nBARBARA GALLUCCI\nKATE GILMORE\nMARY HEILMANN\nJESSICA JACKSON HUTCHINS\nLALEH KHORRAMIAN\nHANNAH LEVY\nLAUREL NAKADATE\nSARA GREENBERGER RAFFERTY\nJESSI REAVES\nNANCY SHAVER\nAGATHE SNOW\nKIANJA STROBERT\n\n\nOpening Saturday\, April 7 at SEPTEMBER: Sit-In\, a collective look at the split behavior of a familiar form. \nIn an interrogation room\, two chairs face each other across a desk. At a birthday party\, the guest of honor sits at the head of the table. In a museum\, bench seating is placed at regular intervals in the center of a room. At a principal’s office\, the student is instructed to “sit down.” On a stage\, a comedian stands beside an empty stool. At an auction\, everyone sits\, save the auctioneer. \nA seat is a frame and a proposition. A person sitting either subscribes to or rejects suggestion; their body gives in to the framework\, or contradicts it- settles into an armrest or sits forward\, lounges on a chaise or perches on edge. \nWhen the functionality of the form is prioritized\, a chair is more or less self-evident. A seat with four legs and a back can have an uncomplicated purpose. A folding chair provides the utilitarian uses of being portable stackable\, and sit-able. An execution chair is constructed to suit its intention: remain stable\, unbreakable\, and provide constraints. \nHowever when aesthetics and composition reign\, a new function is served. The grandeur and adornment of a throne purposes to reflect the power of the sitter\, the elegance and recline of the Eames proposes to embody a comfortable lifestyle. Here\, the chair becomes a status symbol\, the position of power or the privilege of leisure. \nFor the exhibition Sit-In\, a cacophonous individuality arises. Vastly distinctive seats have been created\, deconstructed\, reconfigured and repurposed. Positioned in rows and facing a unified direction\, a collective stance arises. Draped curtains provide the suggestion of a backdrop- a gesture of substantiation or revelation of artifice. Sit-in is a theatre of subversion and a revision of what we know. \nFor more information\, please visit the gallery\, our website\, or contact kristen@septembergallery.com.
