DESCRIPTION:Susan Goldstein Artist Talk\nMonth of Photography Lecture Series\nThe Denver Art Museum\nMarch 12\, 2019\, 7-8:30 pm \nDenver photographer Susan Goldstein began her photography career working for Denver’s Westword starting in the late 70s. \nShe shifted the focus of her practice later in life\, working in both straight photography and photo-based collage. \nInspired by collecting and interest in social commentary\, much of Goldstein’s work explores ideas of absence and presence as well as the collision of past and present. \nSusan Goldstein\nDenver Art Museum\n(Hamilton Building\, Sharp Auditorium)\n100 W 14th Ave Parkway\nDenver\, CO 80204\ntickets: 720-913-0130\nmembers & students: $5\nnon-members: $12 \n(Denver CO) Edge Gallery will host a solo exhibition of her series UNDERCURRENTS: Fault Lines. The show will open with a public reception on March 22\, 2019\, from 6-10 pm and will be on view from March 22 – April 7. The artist will be in attendance at a second reception on March 29 from 6-10 pm.  \nGoldstein’s work is also included in the Colorado Photographic Arts Center’s exhibit\, Elemental Construction\, on view through April 7 at the McNichols Civic Center. Her new collage work will also be on view as part of the Denver Collage Club show atAlto Gallery March 1 – 30\, with an opening reception was March 1 from 6-9 pm.  \nSusan Goldstein 1950-  \nSusan Goldstein was born in the middle of the last century in Indianapolis\, Indiana and moved to Boulder\, Colorado to attend college in 1968. After moving to Denver in 1978 she began working for Denver’s weekly newspaper\, Westword\, eventually becoming the staff photographer. An admitted “late bloomer” she pivoted from the world of journalism to fine art at 49. Goldstein has been described by Denver’s art critics as a multifaceted artist who\, in addition to creating many photographic and photo based bodies of work\, has successfully made sculpture from antique office supplies\, addressed a variety of political issues using collage and installation and generally explored mixing materials to make new imagery. Since 2011 her primary focus has been creating antique photo collages for Bending Time and making photographs for her series UNDERCURRENTS.  \nThe most recent collage work\, Bending Time\, unites her love of collecting\, photography and collage. UNDERCURRENTS is described as “taking the temperature” of the United States. Many\, but not all\, of the photographs in UNDERCURRENTS are inherently political. By documenting the visual clues that offer insight about the state of a place\, the concerns of the residents and the hopes and sometimes failed dreams of those inhabitants Goldstein continues to create a portrait of “America”.  \nGoldstein’s photographic work is included in numerous collections including the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, the Museum of Modern Art\, Joaquim Paiva Collection\, Rio De Janeiro\, Brazil\, Luz Astral Foundation\, Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, Colorado Photographic Arts Center and the Crawford Hotel\, Union Station\, Denver\, CO. Her work has been exhibited extensively including at the New Mexico Museum of Art\, the Griffin Museum of Photography’s Stoneham Gallery\, Colorado Photographic Art Center and Colorado College’s Idea Space.
