SUMMARY:Devon Dikeou Exhibiting @ September Gallery: Sit-In\, a collective look at the split behavior of a familiar form - New York
DESCRIPTION:Devon Dikeou\, BETWEEN THE ACTS (VIRGINIA WOOLF): Jimmy Kimmel\, 2014-Ongoing\, Variable dimensions\n\n\n\n\nSIT-IN\nApril 7-May 20\, 2018\nOpening: Saturday\, April 7\, 6-8pm\n\n\nSEPTEMBER\n449 Warren St\, #3\nHudson\, NY\n\nSARAH BRAMAN\nJANE BUSTIN\nNICOLE CHERUBINI\nLIZ COLLINS\nFRANCESCA DIMATTIO\nDEVON DIKEOU\nBARBARA GALLUCCI\nKATE GILMORE\nMARY HEILMANN\nJESSICA JACKSON HUTCHINS\nLALEH KHORRAMIAN\nHANNAH LEVY\nLAUREL NAKADATE\nSARA GREENBERGER RAFFERTY\nJESSI REAVES\nNANCY SHAVER\nAGATHE SNOW\nKIANJA STROBERT\n\n\nOpening Saturday\, April 7 at SEPTEMBER: Sit-In\, a collective look at the split behavior of a familiar form. \nIn an interrogation room\, two chairs face each other across a desk. At a birthday party\, the guest of honor sits at the head of the table. In a museum\, bench seating is placed at regular intervals in the center of a room. At a principal’s office\, the student is instructed to “sit down.” On a stage\, a comedian stands beside an empty stool. At an auction\, everyone sits\, save the auctioneer. \nA seat is a frame and a proposition. A person sitting either subscribes to or rejects suggestion; their body gives in to the framework\, or contradicts it- settles into an armrest or sits forward\, lounges on a chaise or perches on edge. \nWhen the functionality of the form is prioritized\, a chair is more or less self-evident. A seat with four legs and a back can have an uncomplicated purpose. A folding chair provides the utilitarian uses of being portable stackable\, and sit-able. An execution chair is constructed to suit its intention: remain stable\, unbreakable\, and provide constraints. \nHowever when aesthetics and composition reign\, a new function is served. The grandeur and adornment of a throne purposes to reflect the power of the sitter\, the elegance and recline of the Eames proposes to embody a comfortable lifestyle. Here\, the chair becomes a status symbol\, the position of power or the privilege of leisure. \nFor the exhibition Sit-In\, a cacophonous individuality arises. Vastly distinctive seats have been created\, deconstructed\, reconfigured and repurposed. Positioned in rows and facing a unified direction\, a collective stance arises. Draped curtains provide the suggestion of a backdrop- a gesture of substantiation or revelation of artifice. Sit-in is a theatre of subversion and a revision of what we know. \nFor more information\, please visit the gallery\, our website\, or contact kristen@septembergallery.com.

DESCRIPTION:On April 7th\, Gallery 1261 is proud to present Spaces\, an extraordinary survey of both landscapes and cityscape works by four of the gallery’s leading artists. Valerio D’Ospina\, Dianne L. Massey Dunbar\, Ulrich Gleiter\, and Dale O Roberts all come together to showcase their perspectives on the environments we inhabit in their individual styles.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening April 7th\, K Contemporary is proud to present a solo exhibition for Suchitra Mattai\, a multi-disciplinary Denver artist with a growing international reputation. Having personally inhabited landscapes from Guyana to Nova Scotia\, from New York to Udaipur\, India\, and from Minneapolis to the Rocky Mountains\, she brings to “Sweet Asylum” a nomad’s perspective on the nature of home.

SUMMARY:Prographica/KDR present "Interior Worlds" works by Kenny Harris - Seattle\, Washington
DESCRIPTION:Kenny Harris \nInterior Worlds\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 5 – 28\, 2018\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Reception:\nThursday\, April 5\, 6-8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Talk:\nSaturday\, April 7\, 2pm\n\n\n\n\n\nPrographica/KDR is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of recent work by Venice Beach\, CA painter Kenny Harris. The show\, titled Interior Worlds\, features a collection of portraits and interior paintings.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe installation will mark the artist’s debut exhibition in Seattle and Harris’ fifth solo exhibition with\nKDR(Koplin Del Rio).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n313 Occidental Avenue South\nSeattle\, WA 98104\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n(206) 999-0849\n\n\n\ninfo@koplindelrio.com\n\n\n\nwww.koplindelrio.com\n\n\n\nfacebook.com/koplin.delrio\n\n\n\ntwitter.com/koplindelrio?lang=en\n\n\n\ninstagram.com/koplindelrio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday – Saturday\, 10am-5:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKenny Harris\, “Modern Vanity\,” 2017\,\noil on canvas\, 30 x 20″\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKenny Harris has made a career out of describing his environment both at home and abroad. He has traveled around the world depicting subject matter both grand and mundane. Travel is a constant pull for this artist\, and he has made bodies of work focused on Central America\, South America\, Italy\, France\, Cuba\, Turkey\, China\, as well as the US and his backyard of Venice Beach. His oil paintings define a place and mood\, changing spaces and cityscapes with a character and resonance from direct observation. \nFor this exhibition\, Harris focused on finding his voice in portraiture through different means. In this new body of work\, the artist has turned his inquiry from the depiction of quiet solitary spaces to the interior worlds of his creative peers in Los Angeles. The artist’s friends are shown engaged in activities or contemplation\, inviting the viewer to participate in their quiet moments. The environments play a major role in the paintings by supporting the psychological space of the sitter–sometimes the figures even merge with a background or vibrate against it. \nI was approaching the portraits with experimentation in mind\, exploring the genre in my own voice but without pre-determined methods. The needs of each composition demanded various technical approaches\, hence the variety of paint application and scale. I attempted to create portraits that evoke the human experience through a textured surface which is at once illusion and object.

DESCRIPTION:March 10\, 2018 – April 21\, 2018\nArtist Remarks: Saturday\, March 24\, 2018\, 2-5 pm\nKim Piotrowski // Heather Marshall // Nina Rizzo \n \nLinda Warren Projects is proud to announce three powerful exhibitions by artists: Kim Piotrowski\, Now That the Sky Has Fallen (Gallery Y)\, Heather Marshall\, Memories That Are Not Mine (Gallery X)\, and Nina Rizzo\, Le Lavage (Gallery O). \nA compelling painting has no gender\, but for these mighty artists their femininity is no docility. Whether it be Piotrowski’s lyrical abstractions\, Marshall’s small intimate figure paintings\, or Rizzo’s textural abstractions\, each of them imbed salient\, and at times poignant narratives that are universally human yet deeply personal. Unapologetically creating artwork that reexamines their own fears\, histories\, and longings\, each artist captures vulnerability and masterfully reengineers it into their own source of power and inspiration. The exhibition\, as a whole\, threads a beautiful ribbon that ties together the aesthetic mastery of each painter and embodies the poetic sentiments that every human relates to no matter which body you live in. \nGallery Y – Kim Piotrowski\, Now That the Sky Has Fallen \nPiotrowski’s paintings have always danced between abstraction and reference. It is perhaps why the artist\, for the first time\, has decided to collaborate with literary poet Rose McLarney. Their chance meeting at Hambidge\, a creative residency in Georgia \n\n \nKim Piotrowski\, “Never Easy”\, 2017\, ink on paper\, 13 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ \n\nwhere both artists participated\, lent itself the opportunity for a unique creative exchange. In an installation titled “A Door Open\,” Piotrowski’s paintings on paper will spar and harmonize willingly with McLarney’s poems. Each poem is a direct response to each painting. The artist’s signature style of controlled chaos is a constant. Piotrowski’s multilayer veils of surface exude an inner energy that is both contemplative and lyrical in nature. The artist seamlessly interchanges and integrates the assertiveness of mark making while considering each line and object that could possibly reference the natural world. Phantomlike landscapes and figures appear and disappear within the paintings. Enigmatic lines and colors push and pull for attention\, so much that they wrap around the corners of the paintings\, demanding that we consider the mark and allocate recognition. Piotrowski’s process is methodical and unconfined as the paintings themselves – “layers of thin ink washes\, scrubbed\, and manipulated by time and touch\, these passages push against the opacity of forms and gestural lines that create a new dynamic within the picture plane.” The stage is set where even the smallest marks have a role. An orchestrated\, abstracted symphony of colors and lines that pursue freedom and the flexibility to exist. \nKim Piotrowski\, a Chicago based artist\, received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has continued showing in both group and solo exhibitions since 1991. Most recently her work has been featured at Forum Gallery\, NYC\, Marcia Wood Gallery in Atlanta\, GA\, and Grolle:Pass:Projects in Wuppertal\, Germany. Piotrowski has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognition including the Illinois Arts Council Visual Artist Grant\, Artadia Grant and most recently the Sustainable Arts Foundation amongst many others. She has also been artist in residence at Hambidge\, Yaddo\, Ragdale and Oxbow. This is Piotrowski’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. \nGallery X – Heather Marshall\, Memories That Are Not Mine \nMarshall’s new series of small\, figurative\, monochromatic paintings emanate the artist’s introspective spirit and exceptional attention to details. Inspired by the intersection of the ordinary and the extraordinary\, Marshall looks to familiar sights\, and in this case it is her family. Women taken from her family album are reexamined and decontextualized. The protagonists within \n\n \nHeather Marshall\, “Baby I’m the Baddest”\, 2017\, oil on panel\, 5 5/8″ x 6″ \n\nminimal backgrounds tug at different emotions that range from fiercely confident to naively optimistic. Regardless of age each woman asserts her power and lives comfortably within her skin. Although visually from another era\, Marshall assigns contemporary pop songs for titles of each painting\, alluding to the ceremonial coming of age experience we all traverse through life. The distinct color pallet\, with its soft patina like tones\, emphasize time not only for the characters but for the artist herself. Each small painting takes lengthy periods of time to percolate and to finally produce. The artist’s impeccable hand and thoughtfulness generate poetic paintings that transcend time. Her ode is not necessarily to the specific woman\, but to time herself…always moving but never changing. \nHeather Marshall is a Virginia-based artist and educator\, and her work has been exhibited in such venues as Hanover College Art Gallery in Indiana\, The Snite Museum of Art at University of Notre Dame and Zolla/Lieberman Gallery\, Chicago. Marshall received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from University of Notre Dame. This is Marshall’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. \nGallery O – Nina Rizzo\, Le Lavage \nRizzo’s global travels have informed her practice and cemented a process that is both reactive and imaginative. Drawing from visits to museums and international residencies\, the artist pulls from historical cannons that vary from Flemish paintings to Icelandic textiles. While visiting France\, Rizzo identified a potential subject matter that felt both mundane yet resembled a sensibility to the non-objective and non illusionistic practices of the geometric abstractionists. Rizzo’s new series of paintings draws from the simple shapes of laundry. Clothes that tumble in a centripetal direction with a set of perimeters based on color and non-objective compositions. Socks\, panties\, and bras…private items that inhabit her physical proximity deliver a \n\n \nNina Rizzo\, “Monument to Underwear”\, 2017\, oil on canvas\, 24″ x 24″ \n\ncontradictory dialogue. Paintings with gestural expression and thick textural strokes that over time fade into abstraction. Rizzo’s pictorial transitions explore aesthetic possibilities and give us a glimpse into her private voyeuristic world\, one that is genuinely and profoundly personal and records the passage of time and locations. Lavage – cleansing by irrigation or the like – purging. \nChicago-based artist Nina Rizzo has exhibited widely across the globe including such venues as the Association for Icelandic Visual Artists in Reykjavik\, Iceland; Megumi Ogita Gallery in Tokyo\, Japan; Tinlark Gallery in Los Angeles; E & W Gallery in Santa Fe; Art Palace in Houston; Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge; and Bad Dog Gallery in DeKalb\, IL. Rizzo has been the recipient of a number of prestigious artist residencies including one at Chateau de La Napoule\, France in 2005 and another in Marnay-Sur-Seine\, France called CAMAC in 2014. Others include Ragdale Foundation in Lake Forest\, IL; Vermont Studio Center; and Northern Illinois University Summer Research and Artistry Grants in Japan and Iceland and she has also exhibited and had a residency at CRETA in Rome\, Italy. The artist received her MFA from The University of Texas at Austin\, and her BFA from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Rizzo is currently Associate Professor in Painting at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb\, IL. This is the artist’s fifth exhibition at Linda Warren Projects. \nFor additional information or biographical details\, please visit www.lindawarrenprojects.com or contact the gallery at (312) 432-9500.

In Feibleman’s hands\, the ancient Japanese technique of nerikomi — in which ceramic objects are decorated with patterns created by combining different\, often differently colored\, clays — has been reinvented through the introduction of ideas drawn from glassmaking\, mosaic art\, jewelry making and other disciplines. Obsessively ornamented\, with patterns that multiply across their surfaces\, Feibleman’s most striking works are reminiscent of objects as diverse as blue-and-white Delftware\, central Asian metalwork and printed Indian textiles.” – Scott Norris \nDorothy Feibleman’s new collection of dinnerware includes a functional collection of bone china plates with the artist’s Nerikomi imaging. They are avaiable in’ white on white’ (pictured\, the six plates top and bottom)\, ‘blue on white’ and ‘green and red on white’ patterns. \nThe matte ‘white on white’ bowls and plates (plates on either end of the table setting\, all white bowls) are made from Feibleman’s own crafted clay\, a porcelain parian. These matte white Nerikomi plates and bowls are unique depending on how the artist cuts the patterns on the imaging block. The matte Nerikomi plates are spun and compressed by Feibleman and are made by special order. They can also be fabricated in grey or black.\nAll dinnerware is sturdy and dish washer safe. \nThe red and green tea bowls and sake cups (also pictured in the center of the table) are one of a kind pieces made by Feibleman with her signature porcelain clay – soft paste parian.

SUMMARY:Shadow Shift - Danielle Fatherly & Gary Oakley - Mirada Fine Art Gallery - Indian Hills\, CO
DESCRIPTION:Danielle Hatherley & Gary Oakley \n \nshadow SHIFT\n\nOpening Reception: Friday\, March 23rd\, 6-9pm  \n\nExhibition:  March 24th – April 29th\n\n\n\nLight and Shadow Merge in Perfect Harmony.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGary Oakley\, ‘Purple Passages\,’ \nOil on Canvas\, 60″ x 60″\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo artists from different worlds with very different techniques will meet in an extraordinary artistic union on March 23rd.  Australian artist Danielle Hatherley (now a Boulder resident) and New Mexico artist Gary Oakley will combine their considerable talents in an exhibit hosted by Mirada Fine Art entitled ‘Shadow Shift.’ What makes these two artists a perfect pairing is their mastery at distilling a scene down to its essence. Carefully edited color palettes capture the instance light and shadow meet\, shift\, are united and merge in gleaming harmony in their contemporary landscapes.   “Danielle and Gary seemed like a perfect pairing to me\,” enthused gallery owner Steve Sonnen. “They evoke a similar feel\, a tranquil yet vibrant mood that epitomizes our Colorado lifestyle and surroundings.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDanielle Hatherley\, \n‘Fleeting Moment\, Central Park\,’\n Oil on Canvas\, 30″ x 48″\n\n\n\n\n\nThat perfect harmonious moment is what inspires (or as the artist herself admits\,’obsesses’) Danielle Hatherley to paint. Danielle grew up trying to capture the spectacular light of Sydney’s harbor and beaches. Recreating a scene\, however\, soon became not enough for this artist. Capturing the play of sunlight and shadow became her passion. Her move to Colorado with its stunning vistas and sunsets reinvigorated her work. Sunsets\, backlit forests and luminous abstracted landscapes leap from her radiant canvasses with unrivaled clarity and tone.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGary Oakley\, ‘Drawing\,’\nOil on Canvas\, 18″ x 18″\n\n\n\n\n\nThe road artist Gary Oakley has taken in his artistic journey has been long and varied\, culminating in his current technique. Capturing the rich hues of the Western landscape within his canvases\, Oakley employs unexpected pops of metallic paint and texture. A Geology major with a Master’s in Psychology\, Gary began to listen to his ‘inner artist’ in the 1990s\, initially becoming a photographer\, and later turning his attention to painting. He continues to create compositions of a scene in his mind\, seeing the world as if through a camera’s lens and zooming in on essential elements. \n\nThe melding of these two artists’ visions are captured in ‘shadow SHIFT\,’ kicking off with an artists’ reception on Friday\, March 23rd from 6-9pm at Mirada Fine Art. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDanielle Hatherley\, ‘Silver Lining\,’ Oil on Canvas\, 30″ x 48″\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere:\nMirada Fine Art\n5490 Parmalee Gulch Rd.\,\nIndian Hills\, CO 80454\n(minutes from Denver)\nwww.miradafineart.com

SUMMARY:Kate Gilmore "Morning Rage" - ASPECT / RATIO Projects Gallery
DESCRIPTION:MORNING RAGE: \nKATE GILMORE \n02.23.2018 – 04.07.2018 \n~ \n\n\n\nAspect/Ratio is pleased to present Morning Rage\, the first Chicago solo exhibition for artist Kate Gilmore. \nMorning Rage will introduce new sculptural works\, as well as the single channel video Beat It. This video was part of an installation and performance created for the H & R Block Space in Kansas City\, Missouri. Michael Jackson’s famous 80’s hit song title is appropriated here\, while the video unfolds through an oculus in the sculpture taken from a fixed camera stationed overhead. Throughout the video\, the walls of the installation are being dismantled and reconfigured to reveal a series of stenciled text that reads: ‘beat it\,’ repeated over and over. \nThrough the use of repetition and performance\, much of Gilmore’s practice demonstrates a resolute transformative process that comes out of destruction. Destruction and dexterity are arsenal for the artist who consistently goes well beyond the limitations of what material is generally prepared to endure. It is with this prowess and fervor that fuel her latest sculptural works. Highly lacquered metal cubes are hammered continuously\, creating scars and dismantling their otherwise polished appearance. \nKate Gilmore is a New York multimedia based artist and Associate Professor of Art and Design at Purchase College at SUNY Purchase. Gilmore received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts and Bachelors from Bates College. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions including: Museum of Modern Art\, MCA Chicago\, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, Brooklyn Museum\, ICA Philadelphia and The Rose Art Museum. Notable exhibitions and awards include: The Art Prize 2015; the Whitney Biennial 2010; The Moscow Biennial\, Moscow; and PS1 Greater New York 2005 & 2010. Gilmore’s work is included in many public institutional collections: Museum of Modern Art\, New York; Brooklyn Museum\, Brooklyn\, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York\, NY; Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, Massachusetts; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, San Francisco\, California; Rose Art Museum\, Waltham\, Massachusetts; Indianapolis Museum of Art\, Indiana\, Indianapolis; and Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, Illinois. \n\n\n\nASPECT / RATIO \n864 N. SUMMARY:Beverly Fishman "Chemical Sublime" * Kavi Gupta Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Beverly Fishman\, CHEMICAL SUBLIME\n02.24.2018 — 04.28.2018 \n\n\n\n835 W. Washington Boulevard\nChicago\, IL 60607\n\n\n\n\n\n(312) 432-0708\ninfo@kavigupta.com\nwww.kavigupta.com\nTues. – Fri.\, 10am-6pm; Sat\, 11am-5pm\n\n\n\nKavi Gupta is pleased to present CHEMICAL SUBLIME\, a solo exhibition of original work by Beverly Fishman.  \nCombining the handmade with the industrial\, Fishman employs a variety of techniques to explore technological\, scientific\, and biological systems of perception and representation\, instigating constructive conversations about the ways people see their bodies and minds\, and construct their identities. Her most illustrious bodies of work engage with the visual language of the medical industrial complex. For example\, her highly-polished Pill reliefs utilize iconic pharmaceutical forms as the basis for seemingly abstract compositions that radiate with color. Her brilliantly complex Dividosepaintings appropriate the unsettling\, multilayered\, linear aesthetic of medical imaging technologies such as EEG and EKG machines\, provoking levels of optical fascination capable of eliciting physiological responses from viewers. \nThough seemingly direct\, Fishman’s work is daringly open. It poetically kindles the most pressing issues of our time: how humanity sees itself and allows itself to be seen; the extent to which technology alters our perception of ourselves; the choices we face whether to alter our reality or to alter our experience of it. Equally important to its meaning are its formal aspects: its juxtaposition of colors and patterns; its evocative art historical references; its oscillation between abstraction and representation. Of constant primacy is the work’s undeniable exactitude of craft\, which elevates its physical presence to heights equal to its enigmatic conceptual depth. \nFishman has relentlessly sought out new materials and processes in order to realize her evolving vision. That search has occasionally yielded opportunities to pioneer new production techniques\, always in service to the concepts she is exploring. Her materials list has included traditional supports such as wood\, paper\, blown glass and aluminum\, as well as more unconventional elements like cast resin\, mirrored Plexiglass\, powder-coated metal and phosphorescent pigments. She also frequently uses mediums like chrome and urethane automotive paint that speak in conversation with the legacy of the Detroit area\, where she has lived and worked as the Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Painting Department of the Cranbrook Academy of Art since 1992. \nSince earning her MFA from Yale in 1980\, Fishman has received multiple prestigious awards\, including a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship\, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award\, and an NEA Fellowship Grant. Her work has been written about extensively in the press\, including in The New York Times\, Art21 Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, Art Critical and Juxtapose. Her recent solo exhibitions include DOSE\, curated by Nick Cave\, at the CUE Art Foundation\, New York\, NY\, Pill Spill\, at the Detroit Institute of Art\, Detroit\, MI\, and Pharmako\, at Galerie Richard\, Paris\, France. \nWork by Fishman is included in multiple private and institutional collections\, including that of the Miami Art Museum\, the MacArthur Foundation\, Alfred Taubman\, the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Columbus Museum of Art\, The Kresge Art Museum\, and the Istanbul Art Centre.

SUMMARY:You Are Here: Gregory Block Solo Exhibition at Sugarcube - Presented by Gallery 1261 - Denver\, CO
DESCRIPTION:You Are Here:\nGregory Block Solo Exhibition\nMarch 14th – May 13th\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModern humans are pretty good at getting from point A to point B\, especially with our phones to tell us where to go and how to get there.  But we are here.  Where’s that? \nSometimes it doesn’t hurt to get the bigger picture; to step back and look at things in context.  This series of maps\, constructed from aluminum cans and carpet tacks\, firmly anchors the viewer in the universe\, the Milky Way Galaxy\, the solar system\, and on earth\, and hones in on our very real location amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life.  It’s a tourist guide\, an explorer’s tool\, an evacuation plan; a study of civil engineering\, geography\, astrophysics and the boundaries of human intelligence.  But more than anything\, it’s a reminder that regardless of where we’re going or where we’re coming from\, we are always here. \nThis exhibition will be on display daily at the SugarCube Building at 1555 Blake St.\nView map here \nOpening reception: Wednesday\, March 14th 6:30-8:30pm \nSugarcube viewing hours:\nM-F: 7:30 am – 10:00 pm\nSaturday: 9:00 am – 10:00 pm\nSunday: 9:00 am – 6:00 pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGregory Block\nColorado\nAluminum cans and acrylic\, 48 x 71″\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGregory Block\nMany Moons\nScorched aluminum cans and mixed media\, 32 x 48″\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGregory Block\nMultiverse 1\nScorched aluminum cans and mixed media\, 24 x 20″

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition run: March 10 – April 21\, 2018 \n\n\n\nDoug Stapleton’s collages employ extreme precision\, keen composition\, and idiosyncratic source materials which address identity\, history\, and ancestral themes. His interest in traditional illustrative and reproduction techniques give his work gravity and a sense of solidity.\n\n\n\n\n\nJeffrey Michael Austin has a fascination with the phenomenon of reflection. SUMMARY:Adriana Corral - Unearthed: Desenterrado - Socorro\, TX & El Paso\, Juárez
DESCRIPTION: Black Cube Sheds Light on Shadowed Part of\nAmerican History\, U.S.-Mexico Border Control \n\n\nMarch 9 – June 9\, 2018 \n\n\nLocated in Socorro\, Texas \n\n\nA 60-foot flagpole\, hoisting a large-scale white flag adorned with bald and golden eagles\, will serve as counter-monument\, acknowledging a facility that processed Mexican workers into the U.S. between 1951-1964. \nAdriana Corral – Unearthed – Desenterrado\nFebruary 27\, 2018 – Black Cube’s latest exhibition\, Unearthed: Desenterrado\, is an outdoor\, large-scale artwork by Texas-based artist Adriana Corral. Located within the historic grounds of the Rio Vista Farm in Socorro\, Texas\, the installation—featuring a solitary 60-foot flagpole hoisting an enormous white\, cotton flag—speaks to the deeply rooted history between the U.S. and Mexico. Embroidered on either side of the flag is the illustration of a “Mexican” golden eagle and an “American” bald eagle\, each emblematic of their respective nation’s patriotism. \nVisible from the El Paso–Juárez horizon from March 9 until June\, the flag stands as a counter-monument for the Rio Vista Farm\, a facility most notably recognized as a key-processing center for the Bracero Program. The Bracero Program\, which was established by the federal government during World War II\, is known as one of the largest foreign worker programs in U.S. history. According to finding from the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, many people have described the Bracero Program as a period of “legalized slavery” in which Mexican workers “were met with medical and psychological examinations\, stripped of their clothing\, organized into lines\, and fumigated with DDT before they could be evaluated by farming contractors.” \nCortney Lane Stell\, Black Cube’s Executive Director + Chief Curator\, believes that “by calling attention to this overlooked park of American history\, Corral’s work endeavors to stand as an acknowledgement of unknown human rights violations\, as well as to inspire deeper conversations about our history —and future—of border control along the U.S.–Mexico border.” \n“This project emphasizes the importance of recognizing and confronting the voids within our American history\,” Corral adds. \nAdriana Corral – Unearthed – Desenterrado\nUnearthed: Desenterrado will be on display at the Rio Vista Center until June. During the three-month exhibition\, Corral’s flag will become tattered and worn due to inclement weather. After its display in Socorro\, the flag will be exhibited in museums and cultural institutions across the country. \nAbout Adriana Corral\nAdriana Corral is based in San Antonio\, Texas. Her installations\, performances\, and sculptures embody universal themes of loss\, human rights violations\, concealment\, and memory. Corral employs a rigorous researched based practice where anthropologists\, writers\, journalists\, gender scholars\, human rights attorneys\, and victims provide her with the foundation for her works. \nCorral received her Master of Fine Arts from The University of Texas at Austin and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at El Paso. In 2016\, Corral was invited to attend the 106th session of the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances at the United Nations in Geneva\, Switzerland. She was also selected for the Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Grant and was named one of 18 Artists to Watch by Modern Painters. She recently attended the International Artist-in-Residence at Artpace and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien Residency in Berlin\, Germany. \nAbout Black Cube\nBlack Cube is a nonprofit\, nomadic contemporary art museum. At Black Cube\, we see ourselves as an unconventional museum pursuing the most effective ways to engage new audiences while supporting artists’ sustainability. Without the traditional boundaries of a physical building\, Black Cube is experienced primarily through pop-up art exhibitions conceived by our artist fellows. Black Cube was founded by artist and philanthropist\, Laura Merage. Find out more at www.blackcube.art.
