Tansey Contemporary Denver is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by internationally renowned German artist Udo Nöger, on view at 1743 Wazee Street from April 20th to June 3rd, 2018.
Nöger is well known for his monochromatic, translucent works that give the impression of emitting light. Light, its manifestations and its expression, is the single ongoing focus of the artist’s work, leading to a unique way of painting that captures, analyzes, reworks and reflects – each piece an attempt to make the intangible, tangible. “I use light itself to paint light” the artist states.
To achieve this effect, Nöger layers multiple pieces of canvas or fabric onto one frame either painting or cutting shapes into each different layer beforehand. The layers absorb the light of their surroundings and appear to reflect it back at the viewer. Deceptively simple organic shapes, rarely featured on the surface of the works, unlike traditional painting, introduce a deeper sense of space from which the light radiates out. The shapes also highlight contrasts between light and shade while creating a sense of fluidity and movement. As a result the minimalist gray and white color palette can often take on shades of purples, blues, peaches and greens depending on the time of day and surrounding light.
Born in Germany, Udo Nöger has lived and traveled all over the world. He has exhibited extensively across the world and his works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, and Haus Der Kunst, Munich, among others. This will be his first solo exhibition with Tansey Contemporary.
Please join us to celebrate the opening of the show with the artist on April 20th from 5-8pm at 1743 Wazee Street in LoDo. |
