Tansey Contemporary Presents – RESONANT, LEOPOLDO CUSPINERA MADRIGAL, Recent Work Denver, CO March 7 – April 7, 2019

March 7, 2019

Tansey Contemporary is pleased to present “Resonant: Leopoldo Cuspinera Madrigal, Recent Work” March 7 through April 7, 2019. The opening reception will occur on March 7 from 5 to 7 pm and the artist will attend.

While studying architecture in the 1980s and 90s, Cuspinera Madrigal also sang in a choir. “Resonant” highlights these musical and architectural influences, specifically concepts of space, rhythm, cadence, measures, meters, equilibrium, harmony, and scale. He likens this body of work to dance, which visually manifests sound. Cuspinera Madrigal says, “‘Resonant’ is a series of materialized sonorous mental constructions and joyful moments in which the language employed in both architecture and music is almost the same.” His structured compositions create an expansive, transcendent experience that enables one to “reach out to the immaterial by means of that which is material.” He sees the act of creation as a call and response between himself and the materials.

Cuspinera Madrigal’s work is based in the ancient, pre-Columbian papermaking technique of Papel Amate, which he has modified to create his works.

He continues to hone his technique, which he has used for more than twenty-five years, to make new discoveries and evolve his art practice. He lets the materials themselves – recycled paper pulp, pigments, resins, water – be active participants in the art making process, which he likens to action painting, that balances both rationality and intuition.

Mexican artist, architect, and academic Cuspinera Madrigal holds several degrees and certificates in architecture, theology, cultural heritage, sacred art, historical sciences, industrial heritage, and archaeology from various universities throughout Europe and Mexico.  Cuspinera Madrigal has exhibited extensively throughout Mexico, the United States, Italy, France, and Switzerland. He currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
