What a better way to celebrate the afterglow of Valentine’s day than by watching Shakespeare’s most famous and tragic love story performed by the Colorado Ballet beginning this Friday at 7:30 pm?
Presented by Park Meadows, the corps performs the classic Romeo and Juliet at Denver’s Ellie Caulkins Opera House for eight performances only. Choreographer Derek Deane, former Artistic Director of the English National Ballet, has the talent lined up to make this tragic love story come to life for ballet enthusiasts.
CB Artistic Director Gil Boggs states that, ” A lot of companies can mount a production of Romeo and Juliet but not everyone is capable of one this size. Our company has reached a point where we can perform a production of this scope and we have the dancers to do it.” He calls Deane’s choreography “magnificent” and the sets and costumes “eye candy”. Boggs says the live music by Sergi Prokofiev – played by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra – is “some of the best music ever written for this ballet” and provides viewers the aural experience. Costumes and scenery designed by Roberta Guidi di Bagno, courtesy of the Pittsburg Ballet Theater, are visually sure to transport viewers to post-medieval Italy. However, it is the stunning skills of the dancers that will bring the emotional context to the stage in this limited run.
Not to be missed, this production is now a major work in the ballet world today. For three hours, audiences are gifted an epic journey into the heart of young love, family loyalties, prejudice and ultimately loss. “Our performance is going to transform your evening,” promises Boggs.
